Today we have our Brand Ambassador Ange talking about how she upcycles beauty products and how to help aid with dry skin.
As a beauty blogger, I try a lot of products out and sometimes they just don’t work out. For whatever reason, it doesn’t agree with my skin or a shampoo or conditioner that just doesn’t play nice with my hair type. I don’t like to waste anything, I’m definitely the girl who will eat every last bite of food even if I’m not hungry (that’s a story for another time lol) just so it doesn’t go to waste; I’m the same way with my beauty products, I hate to throw out an entire bottle of product, especially if I realize after the first try that it doesn’t work.
What do I do with that beauty graveyard of unused products, you might ask? I upcycle them, and I mean every last drop! Whether it be a skincare item, shampoo, conditioner or moisturizer I use it to shave my legs, it’s the best way to get rid of any lotion type product without having to throw it away. I live by this, and anytime anyone finds a product that they don’t get along with I recommend this. The only issue that arises, is it tends to leave the skin on my legs a bit dryer, something that simple moisturizer may not help with.
That’s where a really good exfoliating scrub, like the ones found in the Gnarly Whale Shop come in. Sugar scrubs like these are especially great for post-shave because they are extra gentle, and since they are all 100% made from scratch and vegan friendly they play nice after shaving and help to keep your skin from getting irritated. I have also found that if you use a sugar scrub after shaving your chances of razor burn are far less.
The scrub will help smooth out your rough or dry skin, as well as clean out your pores that may be have gotten clogged either from a shaving cream or one of your upcycled products. I have used it twice after shaving (with a hair conditioner) so far and I have been loving it. Not only, does it smell delicious but it really rids my legs of all that dry flakey skin. While we’re talking about scrubs and legs; you can use this if you have plans on self tanning to really exfoliate before so you don’t get streaks or dark patches.
Try out a sugar scrub and let me know how you like it!

First, I never thought about reassigning those back of the medicine cabinet lotions for shaving! Second, those sugar scrubs sound wonderful – never considered how nice they’d probably feel after a close shave.
This sounds fantastic! I love a good sugar scrub…so much nicer than the “ouch” of a salt scrub after shaving! Such pretty colors, too.
I love the idea of reusing beauty products for another purpose when you don’t like them for their intended use! The only thing I’ve ever done is use conditioner for shaving my legs but eventually I got sick of that and the conditioner went under the sink! haha
I love upcycling my old/unused/unwanted makeup products. I’ve actually used old eye shadows in clear nail polish before. It wasn’t horrible but it sure wasn’t an OPI either lol.
These sound awesome! I’ve never been a fan of salt scrub – I much prefer sugar! I’ll have to try them out!
Ahh! I need this scrub! No matter what I try I seem to always get ingrown hairs after shaving but this sounds like just the product to help combat that issue. Thanks for the recommendation!
Those scrubs look amazing! I would love to try those babies out! I love the colors too!
great scrubs, beautiful colors!
ohhh I came close to adding this to my cart just a moment ago, but then couldn’t figure out which smell I wanted…so just ordered their Beachy Waves spray. :)
I love My The Gnarly Whale scrub!!
I’m amazed at the beautiful colors!
Hi Ange :) That’s a good idea. I love sugar scrubs for shaving, they make a huge difference if you get the dreaded shave bumps. I’m glad you mentioned them for pre- self tan too..don’t wanna forget to exfoliate before you do that. Great post! xo
I love anything that can get upcycled! Less waste is what we all need!
This is great, exfoliating at home is something on my to-do list and this just made it so easy and the fact that you our up cycling well makes it even better!
